The Murray River is Australia's longest river, at 2,375 km long (1,500 miles). It begins in the Snowy Mountains in Australia's southeast, and flows through South Australia to the Southern Ocean.

The Darling River is 1,472 km in length. However, if one counted the length of its tributaries near its source as well, the total length would be 2,844 km.

The Murray River (2,375km) is longer than the Darling River (1,472km).

There may be some contention on this issue because some are inclined to count the major tributaries of the Darling in its upper reaches, the Culgoa, Balonne and Condamine, in its figures, which increases the length to 2844 kilometres. However, the actual Darling River itself is much shorter than the Murray.

There is no such river as the Murray Darling. The Murray and the Darling Rivers are two quite separate rivers, not one. The Darling River is a tributary of the Murray. Together, they form the main rivers in what is called the Murray-Darling basin.

When in flood, either river can be well over a hundred metres wide. Many other parts of either river vary from between fifteen to fifty metres wide.

Despite the misinformation that Wikipedia continues to perpetuate, there is no river in Australia called the Murray-Darling. The Murray and Darling Rivers are two separate rivers with their sources thousands of kilometres apart, and together make up the Murray-Darling river system.

The longest single river in Australia is the Murray River, with a total length of about 2375km, or 1475 miles.
