The legislature met for the first time in Atlanta on July 4th, 1868. It has remained in Atlanta continuously with the exception of one day in 2001 when a joint session of the state legislature met for one day in Georgia's fourth capital of Milledgeville to commemerate the states 250th anniversary of a representative government.
