A computer cannot store and work with information unless it has some programs inside its memory. Computer programs are called software and the most important piece of software is the operating system. We use the Microsoft Windows operating system. When a computer is switched on the operating system controls all the hardware inside the computer and all the information moving around in the computer's memory.
We use other Windows software such as Word, Excel and Access. You con easily spot Windows programs because they all have a dark blue bar across the top. Windows programs are specially made to look and work in the same way. They have commands in pull down menus and on toolbar buttons. Many of these commands such as new, open, save and exit do exactly the same job in every windows program. Once you have learned to use one Windows program you will find it easy to learn others
