Slavery existed in Biblical times.... and still continues.

In the UK, slavery was abolished in 1833, and came in in the early 1600s, so was around for roughly 200 years.

In the US, slavery lasted from 1619 to 1865, which is 246 years.

However, in the case of the United States, it is important to note the existence of the sharecropping system, which essentially entrenched African Americans in subservient, farming roles for much of the Reconstruction era and beyond. This practice continued until the end of Reconstruction, in 1877.

Slavery was abolished in the UK in 1833 and in the US in 1865. Unfortunately, slavery continues today. Millions of people are still slaves in some parts of the world, mostly in South Asia and Africa.

The ways in which it is done have changed. Today, slaves may work because of things like a high debt. Many victims are told that their families will be harmed if they report the slave owners. Many slaves are forced to be domestic servants. In some cases, their families sell them to the slave owners. Some slaves have been trafficked from one part of the world to another. These people are illegally in their host country, and therefore do not report the abuse. Forced prostitution is a type of slavery. Another form of slavery still happening today is forced child labor. Some children have to work in mines or in plantations, or they have to fight wars as child soldiers, for no pay. There are over 60 million child laborers in India alone.
