It totally depends on the department.

Some departments do rotating shifts, and some give you a schedule.

For the most part, you do not chose your schedule. It is picked for you. When you are a rookie, you will most likely get the less favorable hours; however, when you receive around 10 years of seniority, you are given better hours.

Every Department establishes the work schedule based on 40 hour weeks. Meet & Confer or unions also negotiate the number of hours vs. pay.

Some departments have shifts of 8, 10 & 12 hours; not exceeding 40 hours per week unless overtime is paid or PTO (Paid Time off) i.e., comp time.

Usually, a bare minimum of 40 hours per week. That does not include any donated time at the end of the shift, to complete paperwork.
