The Ten Commandments were given in a matter of minutes or more. But afterward, Moses remained on the mountain for forty days (Exodus 24:18) to receive the rest of the Torah. And still later, he went up the mountain for another forty days, twice. Once to ask for God's forgiveness for the people after they made the golden calf (Exodus ch.32), and again in order to receive the second set of Stone Tablets (Deuteronomy ch.9-10; Exodus ch.33-4).

Why did the israelites remain so long at sinai?

Having sinned in the event of the golden calf, the Israelites remained at Sinai while Moses prayed for them for many weeks, and then when he ascended Sinai to receive the second tablets (of the Ten Commandments) from God (Deuteronomy 9-10). They stayed there to build the Tabernacle, which itself was also part of the rectification after the sin of the golden calf. Their sojourn at Sinai totaled one Hebrew (lunar) year, minus ten days.See also:Complaints, and the golden calf

Why did Moses tell people you should honor your mother and father?

Moses did not tell people that. God told them. The Ten Commandments were spoken by God to the entire assembled nation of the Israelites at Mount Sinai (Exodus ch.19-20), and honoring one's parents is one of these Commandments. Honoring one's parents has many reasons. Two of them are: to help hold the family together, and to make it possible for the parents to teach the traditions to the next generation.

Why did pilgrims travel to Sinai?

Why go to Sinai, if you're a pilgrim? Well, in the past people went there to worship the place where Moses was handed to two tables on which was written the ten commandments. These commandments are found in the part of the Bible that is called Exodus, chapter 20, which resembles the Jewish Pentateuch (five books of Moses). At the foot of mount Sinai is an old monastery called St. Catherine's, where some of the most intact parts of the bible was found in 1844. This is called the codex sinaiticus and is a very important source to the bible, and is believed to be from 330 AD. The reason for the importance of this document is that the monks of the middle ages used to change small bits and pieces to match their idea of a correct manuscript. They did this unintentionally, but over long time some of the mistakes got worse. But with sinaiticus and other texts like it, we can piece together something more authentic. That is why Sinai is a destination for a lot of people today.

What are the contents of the Book of Exodus?

A:The Book of Exodus contains the biblical legends of the flight of the Israelites from Egypt and their subsequent forty years of wandering in the wilderness. The book ends with the death of Moses, after which the Book of Joshua takes up the story with the conquest of Canaan. It contains many subplots, including Moses receiving the Ten Commandments while the Israelites made a golden calf to worship, and Joshua's defeat of the Amekelites as long as Moses held his arm up high.

How long after Moses received the ten commandments did he die?

Approximately 40 years. His approximate age when he had the experience at Mt Sinai and received the Ten Commandments was in his early 80s. At 120 according to other sources he climbed to the top of Mt. Nebo, saw the promised land and died. So, it would be exactly forty years if he was exactly 80 when he received the tablets. But it would be slightly fewer years if he was in his early 80s. Best estimation 35-40 years.
