Sir Robert Gordon Menzies was the twelfth and longest-serving Prime Minister of Australia.

On 18 April 1939, he was elected leader of the United Australia Party following the death of Joseph Lyons eleven days earlier, and became Prime Minister on 26 April 1939. On 28 August 1941, party dissension led Menzies to resign as Prime Minister.

However, after forming the Liberal Party of Australia from the remnants of the UAP in 1944, Menzies regrouped to become Prime Minister for the second time on 19 December 1949 when the new Liberal Party, in coalition with the Country Party, beat Labor. He then remained as Prime Minister for another 16 years, a record which has not been broken in Australian politics.

Who was the prime minister in Australia after Robert Gordon Menzies?

Robert Gordon Menzies served as Prime Minister of Australia on two different occasions, so was succeeded by two different men. Following Menzies' first term in office, which lasted from 26 April 1939 until 28 August 1941, the next Australian Prime Minister was Arthur Fadden, for just two months until John Curtin was elected. After Menzies' second term in office, which was from 10 December 1949 until 20 January 1966, Harold Holt then gained the position of Prime Minister.
