There is no evidence that the apostle John was ever on the island of Patmos. Simply because the Book of revelation was signed by a person called John, it was decided late in the second century that this must have been the apostle John. Whoever this John was, it clearly was not the author of John's Gospel, as the style and the theology are too different. Today, many theologians refer to the author of Revelation as "John of Patmos", although some continue to believe that both authors really were the apostle John.
