Not long. In some species a few minutes in others maybe an hour or so and in others maybe a few days. It would be a terribly painfull way for the fish to die and extremely cruel of anyone to do such a thing to a fish.

∙ 14y agoCirculation is not what is needed to keep fresh water fish alive. What is needed is proper filtration performed by a suitable cycled filter. This removes the biproducts of creatures living in the water. The most poisonous of these biproducts is Ammonia. The bacteria in the cycled filter acts upon the (poisonous) Ammonia converting it through (poisonous) Nitrite into (non poisonous) Nitrate. Plants growing in the aquarium can then use up the Nitrate.

∙ 14y agoyes. I caught a sunfish with the hook 5" above the water. The sucker just jumped out of the water for the bait and got caught on hook! I think that was the last time I went fishing!
