If you're an adult, starting a thumb sucking habit should not have much affect on your occlusion, assuming your gums are healthy.

It's a great habit in that, once habituated, it results in instant feelings of calm and an increased ability to go to sleep despite any stress you may have had during the day.

To start developing your thumb sucking habit, get used to sucking your thumb upon going to sleep. If, upon waking, you find that your thumb left your mouth, don't be concerned. Continue doing this for the rest of your life. You'll find that in about one to three months or so it will come quite naturally and, not doing it, will leave you with a feeling that something is missing.

The next times you should consider indulging is when watching TV, reading, being a passenger in a vehicle (some do it while driving but this may be dangerous), hanging with friends and relatives, attending a lecture and other such times in which you won't need both hands.

Enjoy this wonderful, free, legal, convenient, nonintrusive habit. With the advent of the internet, it's catching on with adults and adults are coming out finally.
