Spanish islands are the Canary Islands, which are seven: Hierro, La Palma, Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. This Archipelago is a region of Spain (A "Comunidad Autonoma"). Its oriental edge is placed about 60 miles from Africa (Southern Morocco) and 700 from the Iberic Peninsula (27º 37', 29º 25' NL; 13º 20' ,18º 10' WL. The archipelago has a volcanic origin. It has about 1,000,000 inhabitants. Its fantastic climate, due to alysian winds, and the beauty of its nature, has made them become one of the most important touristic destination in Europe. The main peak is the Teide (3,710 m), an extinguished volcano. The term canaria derives from latin word for dog (canis). It was inhabited by neolithic aborigins (loosely known as "Guanches"), which allegedely had an berber origin, until XV Century, when it was conquered by the Castilian Crown.
