The main peak is the Teide (3,710 m), an extinguished volcano. The term canaria derives from latin word for dog (canis). It was inhabited by neolithic aborigins (loosely known as "Guanches"), which allegedely had an berber origin, until XV Century, when it was conquered by the Castilian Crown.
