Germany occupied most of Europe, encompassing an area of nearly HALF of the continental United States. Japan, occupied mostly ocean; containing the island chains of the Carolines, Solomons, Gilberts, Philippines, Malaysia, etc. And land territories such a the eastern portions of China and Southeast Asia (Thailand formerly Siam, Burma, East Pakistan, and the eastern borders of India). Japan's conquered territories combined, was more than the size of the continental United States.

The Axis Powers, contrary to popular belief, were FAR from conquering the whole world. The whole Americas (North, Central, and South America) were virtually untouched by the Axis. Africa, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, Greenland were like wise unconquered. The North African Campaign with the Afrika Corps under Rommel, was a great battle, but mainly for the British, who have promoted it with movies (films) such as the "Desert Fox" starring James Mason, etc. In reality, North Africa was a "side show" of little military importance for Germany. Germany had originally sent troops to North Africa to bail Mussolini out of trouble. The Russian front was the REAL war for Germany.

Click on the Related Link below for a world map showing Axis Power control and Allied Power control of land areas, and non-belligerent (kinda of neutral) land areas. Note some areas on the map have horizontal lines indicating that those areas where retaken from the Axis powers -- you'll need to include those areas in the total amount of land that the Axis powers once held. Pay attention to the small map key/guide in the lower-center. Sorry -- could not find a better map. Keep searching! ;-) http://www.usd230.k12.ks.us/PICTT/publications/maps/1943/1.html

In Europe during World War II, the Axis Powers at the end of 1940 controlled all of Western Europe, with favorable neutrality being shown by Spain and Sweden. They also controlled Norway and Denmark to the north, most of the territory of recently conquered Poland to the east (including what had once been the independent nations of Austria and Czechoslovakia), and significant portions of North and East Africa, as well.

The axis consisted of Germany, Italy, and Japan. Italy did not conquer all of any nation during the war, seeing as their navy and army were not that strong.

Germany made rapid conquests in the first two years of the war. In September, 1939, Hitler invaded Poland. In the spring of 1940, Hitler invaded Denmark, a neutral nation, and Norway, defying Britain's power in the North Sea. Then, on May 10th, Hitler smashed through Holland and Belgium. The French army collapsed. They had built a massive line of fortifications, the Maginot Line, but it never fired a shot, as it was built on the border of France and Germany. Paris fell quickly. The British army was evacuated at Dunkirk.

In 1941, Hitler, with his newly found Balkan allies of Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria, made a fast assault on Yugoslavia. Within a week, the giant nation was a total wreck. At the same time, Hitler attacked Greece. Athens fell within a month. The British troops there were quickly evacuated to Egypt. Then, an airborne assault on Crete was launched. It was barely successful. Finally, in the summer, Hitler drover 3 million men into the Russian border. The Russian juggernaut had three times as many men at their disposal, but they did not anticipate a German attack, seeing as Germany had signed a peace treaty with them two years ago.

German armies drove quickly into Russia's heart. All of the Baltic Countries, Belarus, and Ukraine lay under the German flag. However, the Germans were finally stopped in front of St. Petersburg and Moscow. It would remain this way for two bitter years, before the Germans would then be pushed back themselves, all the way to Berlin.

Japan, meanwhile, had just as wild, if even more, conquests. The same day as Pearl Harbor, the Japanese launched a full out attack on French Indochina. Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos quickly fell. The British there were driven down the Malay peninsula, and surrendered at Singapore. Japan had already invaded the massive nation of China in 1933, before the war started. Next, Japan swept through the Philippines Islands and the Dutch East Indies. The Caroline, Marshall, and Volcano islands fell soon after. Wake Island, an American island, was taken, as well as the Solomon Islands and most of New Guinea. Burma and Hong Kong were also taken. I know, its a lot of conquests for one year!

In 1943, the Japs launched an invasion for the rest of New Guniea. It failed. The same year, the Japs attacked the Aleutian Islands. They only held on to one island, before being driven off the next year.

The question is a bit misleading, it makes it seem as though Germany was taken over by a foreign power, when this is not the case. Germany was an Axis power. The entire country was controlled by the Nazis, who in turn were leading members of the Axis.
