The average US jet production was well under 3,000 jets, only 833 F-105 Thunderchiefs were produced (of which nearly 400 were lost in the war), while the F-100 Super Sabre (over 240 lost in the war) and F-8 Crusader (approximately 170 lost in Vietnam) averaged slightly over 2,000 produced for the former and under 2,000 for the latter. The F-4 Phantom II was the most produced jet fighter/bomber of the Vietnam War with well over 5,000 aircraft produced (some sources state over 6,000 Phantoms were built).

OVER 760 F4 Phantoms were lost in the Vietnam War, to all causes, and from all services; USAF, USN, and USMC (the USA was not authorized those aircraft). In country/and Thailand (the primary USAF bases) the average F4 strength was less than a thousand F4's at any one given time; with nearly 400 Phantoms stationed in Thailand, and the remainder stationed aboard rotating carriers and land based units in RVN (Republic South Vietnam). Land based F4 units were primarily USMC air units; USMC jets bombed only South Vietnam in support of ground Marines, while their USN counterparts bombed NORTH Vietnam. Altough USN Phantoms DID bomb targets in South Vietnam in support of US Army (USA) troops when available.

What were the long-term effects on the US economy after thr Vietnam war?

No change, cold war continued. War stocks compiled during the cold war were simply expended in Vietnam. The only "real" change was all of those experimental war machines finally got tested in the war and by a process of elimination were replaced by the ultimate war machine(s): Examples: F100 Super Sabre jet fighter bomber, F101 Voodoos, F102 Delta Daggers, F104 Starfighters, F105 Thunderchiefs, A4 Skyhawks, A6 Intruders, A7 Corsairs, F8 Crusaders, B57 Canberra Bombers, were all used in Vietnam, and nearly all used up in Vietnam (shot down or operational crashes)...all of those jet aircraft were REPLACED BY THE F4 PHANTOM! The F4 turned out to be ulitmate US Fighter Bomber; as well as the US's last fighter pilot "aces" (five or more aerial kills/dog-fighting air to air combat victories) of the 20th century.

Was The F-18 hornet in the Vietnam war?

No, the F-18 Hornet was not used in the Vietnam War. The Hornet was introduced into service by the United States Navy and Marine Corps in the 1980s, well after the Vietnam War had ended. During the Vietnam War, the primary aircraft used by the U.S. military were the F-4 Phantom II and the F-105 Thunderchief.

What US jet aircraft suffered the highest loss rate in Vietnam?

The USAF F100 Super Sabre. The F100 fought in Vietnam from 1961 thru 1971, firing it's 20mm cannons against ground targets longer than any other jet attack aircraft. The Super Sabre was also amongst the most favorite to call in by ground forces, because the F100 came in low and CLOSE to the men on the ground all the while firing it's guns.

Did the Navy or Marines ever use enlisted personnel as aircrew in F-4s?

The F4U Corsairs of World War 2 were fighter planes and only took a pilot into battle. Unlike the British, all Pilots for the United States were commissioned officers. The people maintaining the planes were usually enlisted personnel. (Whether regulations permitted it or not, some enlisted personnel learned to fly the F4). The F4 Phantoms of the Vietnam War had a crew of 2. I never heard of them taking an enlisted man into battle. I heard of them taking an enlisted man up in one. He worked on the electronics and used the excuse that he wanted to check out the electronics as the pilot put the plane through its paces. During those flights, the plane would be tested at beyond normal limits. He claimed that it was fun.

What are some interesting What are facts about Vietnam?

America's last jet Aces of the 20th century were from the Vietnam War; they flew the F4 Phantom II jet fighter. The B-52 Stratofortress high altitude strategic bomber fought it's first war in Vietnam. Two B-52 tailgunner crewmen scored MIG kills in aerial combat. Aerial jet combat (Dog-Fighting) over the skies of North Vietnam returned guns to US jet fighter aircraft. Instead of being armed with just missiles.

What is the most used fighter plane?

The most legendary and used fighter plane in US history, is the F4 Phantom II. The F4 performed nearly every combat function in the Vietnam War: Reconnaissance; Wild Weasel (SAM suppression); Fighter Escort; Bombing Missions; and CAS Close Air Support. In addition: 1. The F4 were the USA's LAST FLYING ACE'S of the 20th century. 2. The F4 was the second most producted jet in US history. 3. All branches of the US Forces utilized the F4 in Vietnam: US Air Force; US Navy; and the US Marine Corps. By law, the US Army was not authorized fixed-wing attack aircraft. No other attack jet met those standards.

How many if any American Aces have there been in the last 25 years?

The last US Aces (one USAF & one USN) were in the Vietnam War (1972), flying the vaunted F4 Phantom II jet fighter bomber. Nearly 40 years ago.

What is an f4 fighter jet?

The F4 (F=Fighter/P=Pursuit/B=Bomber/RF=Reconnaissance Fighter/A=Attack) Phantom II is a TWIN engine, TWIN seat (2 crewmen) jet FIGHTER/BOMBER. Originally designed to intercept and destroy enemy bombers to protect the warships of the USN. Like nearly all jets, it was forced into bombing missions in Vietnam, thus becoming, like most of the other jets, a FIGHTER BOMBER. However, not like the other jets, the Phantom was GOOD AT IT! The F4 could do both bombing and fighting...and do them well. The Phantom is America's last ACE's of the 20th century (5 aerial kills each in Vietnam for the USAF and USN...each flying the F4 Phantom II Fighter/Bomber). The Phantom was used in Vietnam by all fighting branches of the military; USAF, USMC, and USN. More Phantoms were produced than any other Vietnam era jet (and more Phantoms were lost than any other US jet during the Vietnam War...nearly 800 destroyed). You can't tell if the F4 has two engines until you look at either the air-intakes or the tail exhaust pipes, and see two at each end. Twin engine for the Phantom does not mean an engine on each wing like the B57 Canberra bomber, as an example.

How fast is an f14 phantom jet?

The F4 Phantom II did over 1,500 mph. If you meant F14 that was a post Viet War jet called the F14 Tomcat.

Why the f4 phantom was inferior to the mig?

Who says it was inferior. More Migs were shot down by Phantoms in Vietnam.

What is a fact about Vietnam?

Last US Air Ace's of the 20th century; they flew F4 Phantom jets.

What are 2 What are facts about the Vietnam War?

1. Histories last war in which a heavy bomber's (B52) tail gunner shot down an enemy interceptor in aerial combat. 2. Last US war of the 20th century with jet aces (two-both flew the F4 Phantom).

Did the thrust ssc break the sound barrier?

Yes it reached a speed of 763 MPH in Nevada in 1997. It had an F4 Phantom Jet engine.

What were the US air bases in Vietnam during Vietnam War?

Theorizing; there was no specialty AFB for strictly F4 training during the war. The F4 Phantom II came from the USN and during & after Rolling Thunder (in '68) the USAF began transitioning from their F100s, F101s, F102, F104s, and F105s to the F4. The USN did the same transitioning from their F8 Crusaders, A1 Skyraiders (propeller driven) and A4 Skyhawks to F4s. The F4 became the near sole workhorse of the Vietnam War; and with all that transitioning going on it seems probable that OJT (On the Job Training) was the method used during those times. And OJT can occur on any USN or USAF base.

What are the three major areas of conflict or significance in the Vietnam War?

Other than the introduction of todays "assault weapons" (AKs and M16s), helicopters, the M113 APC, and the UAVs, the number one primary significance of the Vietnam War was jet warfare. 1. First use of the B52 in war. 2. First experience against sophisticated ground defense systems (Radar, SAMS, etc.). 3. First experience with super-sonic aerial jet to jet combat (MiG21s vs F4 Phantoms, F100 Super Sabres, F8 Crusaders, F104 Starfighters, F105 Thunderchiefs, etc., and B52 tail gunners shot down two MiG21s in the Viet War).
