Fact is nobody knows. It has been estimated there was up to 300,000 around 1770 it is doubtful there was many more as it was reported that only 1500 lived in the area around botany bay & Sydney area and to the north & west by the first white settlers.

This area is the prime spot to live any where on the coast from Perth in the west to the gold coast in the north east. It was reported that the tribe's inland where much larger than on the coast, there was never a report from the first explorers that any group was more than a few families and they where few and far apart.

The largest tribes lived in north Australia. Cook him self named Indian head on Fraser island because of the hundreds of aborigines lined up watching his boat sail by but there is the key that would have been one of the largest groups living in Australia at that time as Fraser is a prime spot and they wound have came together for a feast.

There is around 250 to 300 tribes in Australia and they range over a huge area usually spit up in small family groups. Never has there been a report that a group of them at one time being more than that spotted by cook.

The one in the Sydney area wound have been one of the biggest tribes in the southern half of the country.

So 300,000 is probably a over estimate.
