The term axle can be confusing. On a car or a truck the term "Tandem Axle" is often used to describe a shaft itself, it's housing, or any transverse pair of wheels. The shaft rotates with the wheel which is either bolted or splined in a fixed relationship and is called an Axle or Axle housing. In an even broader sense the word Axle refers to every pair of wheels even if the wheels are not connected together. So, in that case even a pair of independent wheels, let's say, on the front or rear of a vehicle is called an axle. So, you can say a Honda Civic has 2 axles or you could say it has 4 axles and both conclusions are correct. It just depends on how you define the word axle. I personally would say it has 2 axles.
