I'm doing this for science homework. Yahoo.com says that there are 12 chromosomes in a potato plant. another wiki answer said it was 99999999.998645 or something like 8645. I don't really know.

644 because 23 (number of chromosomes in one gamete) divided by 2, times 56 (number of chromosomes in each cell) is 644

Why do chromosomes double during prophase?

When a cell divides, each of the daughter cells should contain a copy of the entire genome. This is the reason why a copy of every chromosome has to be made so that one half can go into each daughter cell. If the parent call contained 23 chromosomes for example, during the synthesis phase of the cell cycle (of which prophase is a part), the total number of chromosomes will increase to 46 since each chromosome will be copied. When the cell divides to create two daughter cells, each daughter cell will contain 23 chromosomes.

Why does a cell make a copy of itself before it divides?

So that the new cells have the same chromosomes as the parent cells.

How many single chromosomes do humans have in their body cells?

Human cells contain forty-six chromosomes each. An exception to this is gametes (oocytes and sperm), which contain twenty-three chromosomes each.

Does each egg and sperm cell contain a full set of 46 chromosomes?

No. These cells contain only half the number of chromosomes as the other cells of the body. Each egg and sperm cell contain only 23 chromosomes.
