There are no countries in Antarctica but there is the Antarctic Treaty to protect Antarctica and preserve the continent for science. Each country that signed the Treaty has agreed to share scientific study results with all other signatory countries, representing about 80% of the population of planet earth.

There are no countries on Antarctica and no permanent population. Many countries have scientific research stations on Antarctica. However, several countries claim territory on Antarctica. The countries with officially recognised claims are Australia, France, Chile, Argentina, United Kingdom, Norway and New Zealand. Brazil has unofficially claimed some Antarctic territory.

Antarctica is made up of avast open land one country only.

Answer:

Antarctica is essentially a country-free zone. No country has laid claim to any territory (that's the rules), many countries have bases there, there is no Government of Antarctica.

Another Answer

There are no countries on Antarctica, although several countries have made territorial claims on the continent.

All land south of 60 degrees S is governed by the Antarctic Treaty, which holds existing land claims in abeyance and prohibits future land claims -- after 1960 when the treaty went into effect.

The treaty has been ratified or signed by governments representing 80% of the earth's population, and dedicates this land to the scientific study of the health of planet earth. All research results produced there are shared with all nations involved.

UK, New Zealand, France, Norway (2 Claims), Australia, Chile, Argentina.

Brazil has a designated 'zone of interest' that is not an actual claim.

Peru has formally reserved its right to make a claim

Russia has inherited the Soviet Union's right to claim territory under the original Antarctic Treaty.

South Africa has formally reserved its right to make a claim.

United States reserved its right to make a claim in the original Antarctic Treaty.

There are no countries on the Antarctic continent: Antarctica is a continent of approximately 14,000,000 sq km -- 10% of the Earth's surface, without countries, cities or permanent population. It is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. Temporary residents and scientists and those who support science: no one lives there permanently.

Seven countries hold claims to Antarctica: Australia, Argentina, Chile, France, New Zealand, Norway, and the United Kingdom, many of which overlap. They do not denote official ownership and activities are restricted by the terms of the Antarctic Treaty, which also allows these countries to have territorial claims without dispute.

At the same time, the Treaty ensures no new claims are made, and that the countries which have claims do not demand any new "rights" based on their historic claims. Other countries including Brazil, Peru, Russia, South Africa, Spain and the United States also claim interest in the Antarctic, but do not have specific territorial claims.

You can learn more by reading the Antarctic Treaty.
