I have read from many sources thru internet and the answer is one year. Now, i have been in the situation wheares I stay outside the US. every 6 months and when my 6 month is up, I would fly back to the US. so my green card would be valid. I have done this about 3 times over the past 2 years and I will wait for one year this time before i go back there this March. However, everytime i was warned at the Immigration that if i keep doing this, they might take away my green card permanently which is a scary thought. I'm trying to figure out if this time when i go back there, i would have an issue at the immigration or not. P.S. I applied for citizenship 2 times and both times i failed because due to my minor criminal record. They said i have to wait another 7 years to reapply and I have a great job outside the US. To be honest, I love the US. but I feel sick every time i think of the law there. It's too stricted and I have no question why the economics has gone down the past few months. My future was ruined due to their citizenship application process. Now I feel afraid to go back there when I had lived there for over 15 years. 15 years and they wouldn't grant me my citizenship and taking away my green card?? I have been a good green card holder for over 10 years paying almost $8000 tax every year. Some country they are.
