How many breeds of cats are there

The International Cat Association recognizes 55 breeds for competition, 12 more for exhibition, and quite a few others for registration only. A breed merely accepted for registration might or might not ever become a recognized breed.

Other registering associations have slightly different lists.

The reason of this is because of mating with other different kinds of cats. Cats from the same species, but different gene pools mated which which created new colors and types of cats. Humans have created Breeds of domestic cat by breeding cats that have the same characteristics, or bred two cats together to get a desired look or temperament.

Cat breeds like dog breeds, were created by humans for different purposes or evolved by themself in different terrain, climate and surroundings. NATURALLY: A Russian blue has thick fur for the colder climates. An Abyssinian's coat is red to beige for camoflague. A Persians long hair is for hot and cold insulation. A Siamese's big ears are for picking up small and quick prey (mice). HUMAN: Flat nose of the Persian was bred into them as this was considered their unique "natural trait". Wild like coat patterns bred into the Bengal to appear more exotic. The ears of the American Curl were a natural mutation but it is now bred for that. Cats are also of different breeds for different personalities. Ragdolls are floppy and gentle, Siamese can be nerotic and shy, domestics can be perfect in any way (good or bad).

There are many different types of cats. Look up the the theory of the immutability of species. It was proven wrong and explains why we have unique breeds of cats, dogs, and other animals.
