There were 6 zones located to the Northwest of Carentan, directly behind the Utah beaches. These zones were identified as A, C, D and were designated for the 101st.
The zones identified as N, O, T were for the 82nd and were to the west of St. Mere Eglise.
Of course, the paratroops did not land according to plan. There were a large group that landed just to the west of St. Mere Eglise and another bunch that landed in the 101st Division zones. There were small groups or individual paratroopers that were scattered all over the coast of Normandy. One paratrooper landed in the water off of Point du Hoc and was rescued by the Rangers and followed them on their assault on the cliffs. What were airborne operations the night before d day?

airborne pathfinders went in before the main airborne assault started to 'light' the drop zones for incoming airborne troops

What are the origins of the us army pathfinder?

During World War II, the pathfinders were a group of volunteers selected within the Airborne units who were specially trained to operate navigation aids to guide the main airborne body to the drop zones. The pathfinder teams (sticks) were made up of a group of eight to twelve pathfinders and a group of six bodyguards whose job was to defend the pathfinders while they set up their equipment. The pathfinder teams dropped approximately thirty minutes before the main body in order to locate designated drop zones and provide radio and visual guides for the main force in order to improve the accuracy of the jump. These navigational aids included compass beacons, colored panels, and colored smoke. When they jumped, the pathfinders many times would encounter less resistance than the follow up waves of paratroopers, simply because they had the element of surprise on their side. Krypton lights were also used prevalently. Once the main body jumped, the pathfinders then joined their original units and fought as standard airborne infantry.

What time did the paratroopers drop on D-day?

The main landings began about 1 A. M. About a half hour before that small groups of pathfinders were dropped, whose job it was to set up radio beacons on the drop zones for the main body of their units, which were already in the air behind them. Most of the pathfinders were dropped in the wrong place though, as were most of the main drops.

What historical event is a bridge too far from?

A Bridge Too Far depicts Operation Market Garden which took place at the end of September 1944. Involved were the US 101st and 82nd Airborne divisions and the British 1st Airborne division along with the British XXX Corps as the advancing ground units. The Airborne Divisions were to drop into Holland and capture and hold key bridges along a single roadway from Eindhoven through Nijmegan to Arnhem and cross the Rhine River.

How do you get out of 82nd airborne and drop my airborne status?

Just resign your Airborne status. As a paratrooper, you are a two time volunteer. You volunteered to join the Army and you volunteered to join Airborne. You can resign from Airborne at will, but you lose your Jump Status and all privileges that come with that status (Jump pay, wearing of the wings ...).
