Barack Obama won 365 (67.8%) of the 538 electoral votes in the 2008 US Presidential election. 270 votes are needed to win an election. Not only did Obama win critical states like Ohio, Virginia and Florida, he cut into traditional Republican states as well, taking Indiana and North Carolina, even a congressional district in Nebraska (which splits its electoral vote if candidates don't win all congressional districts). This all helps explain why Obama won by such a convincing margin.
