As of 2014, there are three members of the U.S. House of Representatives that are openly gay. They are Tammy Baldwin (D, Wisconsin) Barney Frank (D, Massachusetts) Jared Polis (D, Colorado).
Rep. Baldwin was the first openly gay person to win a non-encumbant election, and the only such woman. Notably, an openly gay Republican has never been elected to Congress, likely a reflection of that party's general anti-gay position.

Prior to (and during) the gay marriage movement, which began in full force after 2000, many people in Congress believed that gay people could form private legal contracts and get the same benefits of marriage, which was not true.
As of January 3, 2013-- the first day of the 113 Congress-- there is one and only one openly gay U.S. Senator, Wisconsin Democrat Tammy Baldwin.
