Well, that is an exaggeration. Vedas mention Aryan 33 Gods. We had a few more prior to the coming of Aryans to India, Shiva, Rama, Krishna, and Mother Goddess Durga are such Gods and Goddesses. This does not include the Gods and Goddesses of villages. Wikipedia tries to count but in the end says that all cannot to listed. A person will worship a God or Goddess according to his/her inclination. That is perfectly admissible in Hinduism.
