Neither of them fought directly to avoid destroying the Earth. Instead they fought through proxy wars. Or wars were either side would support one side and then the reverse. These two proxy wars were the Vietnam War and the Korean War. 50,000 men died in the Vietnam War and 33,000 died in the Korean war.
