This question is too ambiguous to be answered adequately.

If you asked "how many people die from drug abuse each year", the general answer would be around 200,000 according to the United Nations in 2012.

However, this does not allow for the war on drugs. So does not count the gang related murder or indeed so called "legal" (prescribed medicines) drugs.

The lives lost in Mexico directly related to drug wars has been put at 35,000 people for a four year period, so that would be about 8750 per year.

You could probably triple or quadruple the number of deaths from "illegal" drugs. Putting the number somewhere between 500,000 to 1 Million.

So just using these figures I would conservatively suggest that up to 1 Million people die globally from drug related events.
