No one really knows. No one knows how many people took part in the Crusades, no one knows how many set off to take part and died en route from some other causes, or who were part of the Crusades and died on their way home afterwards.
In short, there weren't very good records kept in those days. And for every 'official' crusader, ie the knights and nobles, who were shown on the church records as having sworn to uphold the crusades, there was a retinue of people who went with him: grooms, servants, etc. who were never listed anywhere.
