Most people were afraid to challenge the Berlin Wall, because the eastern side of it had armed guards with a clear view of the wall and orders to shoot to kill. Despite this, about 100 people were killed trying to cross the wall and escape from communism into freedom.

The allies raced (trying to beat the Russians) for Berlin.
The USA was trying to stop the spread of Communism in southeast Asia.
The USA went to war with Vietnam because it was a communist country. Also they were allies with the USSR. We were enemies with the USSR so we wanted the USSR to have at least 1 less freind.
Defense of escalating nuclear attack threats, and stopping the growth of communist countries. To go more in depth of concerns from both sides, there is a helpful link underneath That the USSR would work to spread Communism.
It said that the United States will try to "contain" the spread of Communism. It was said after WWII because the Soviets had gone Communist and they were trying to spread it to Western Europe. That is why the US went to war in Vietnam and Korea. Basically, it is to stop the spread of Communism.

The Berlin Wall was patrolled by soldiers on the East German side and they had orders to fire on people trying to climb over the wall to West Berlin.
Spreading Communism, and stifiling Freedom and Liberty !
yes. the gov. showed pictures of people trying to escape being shot to show "what life was like under communist rule."
The Berlin Wall was made of cement, so they don't buy bricks. It is a piece of history and it was a symbol of communism and repression for over 50 years. The night that the first hole was made was one of celebration and freedom. As a child I saw pictures and heard stories of people trying to escape under or over the wall to freedom from East Germany. Families were kept apart for years because they happened to be on one side of the wall or the other. To have a bit of history of something like this reminds people that things can change and that there is always hope.
The Berlin wall started when Germany was divided up into 4 section 1 for the U.S 1 for the USSR 1 for France and 1 for Britain then after that the people in east Berlin were trying to escape communism by fleeing into the western side of Germany the communist were angry and decided to built a wall stopping all from crossing the boarder.
1000000000 people were killed
The Berlin Wall was the border between the half of Germany controlled by the USSR and the half controlled by the other Allies at the end of World War 2. It was a physical manifestation of the tension between the competing political ideas of Democracy and Communism and many people died trying to get from the east side (USSR) to the West and the freedoms it represented.
The Berlin Wall was one of the absurdities of the Cold War, by which a city was cut in half just to make sure that the ideological purity, and the Soviet thought control established in the eastern section of the city would not be contaminated by any ideas leaking in from the west. This was very frustrating to the citizens of Berlin, and many people were killed while trying to cross the wall, often for no more subversive purpose than the desire to visit their own relatives. It was this kind of thing which helped to create a great dislike for the whole communist system, which was overthrown in 1990. So, the Berlin Wall became a symbol of the injustices of Soviet communism.
Relations were made a lot worse as Berlin was more obviously divided. There were increased tensions between Russia and America because Stalin didn't want to allow the East and the West to join together and was trying to stop that. When the Berlin Airlift happened. it made Communism look bad which Stalin didn't like.
Between f100-200 were killed trying to get over the wall.
Yes - shot, killed by land mines, trip wires attached to explosives, beaten to death. At least 125, perhaps as many as 500, people were killed trying to escape.
