Yes. At the time there were lines to enlist in some places. I heard of one instance where people were ready to join one service (we'll say the army) but the line was too long so they moved across the street to a shorter line for another service (say the marines). There were also lots of people who lied about their age to be able to enlist early and others who waited (at times a few years) until their age and instantly enlisted. That one act really did awaken a sleeping giant.
