The number of people having access to clean drinking water i Afghanistan depends on a number of factors. First, the definition of "clean drinking water" may differ from agency to agency. Second, statistics in Afghanistan are, to put it mildly, either too old or too uncertain to be of much direct use. Yet estimates suggest that about 12 % of the rural population and about 19 % of the urban population has access to clean drinking water. Most people get their water from wells, even though some people have to get water from surface storage like lakes and rivers. Most afghans drink tea (i.e. boiled water) in order to avoid illness connected to poor quality water.
