Between 1862 and 1919, there were 19 double recipients of the Medal of Honor, notably including:

Thomas Custer (1845-1876), younger brother of George Armstrong Custer, received two medals as a Civil War cavalry officer, both for bold dashes into Confederate camps, aimed at taking their regimental banners. Custer died with his brothers George and Boston Custer at Little Bighorn.

Robert Sweeney (1853-1890), the only African-American double recipient, was a seaman who received both of his medals for lifesaving actions, during peacetime.

Smedley Butler (1881-1940), later a Marine major general, received his two Medals of Honor as a major during military actions in Mexico and Haiti.
