It depends on how many times a week/month etc you shop, what your average shop is.
One per trip. You'd need to multiply that by the number of trips you make per year, and the lifetime of the bag, to get the total.
If you have them folded up nicely in a suitcase, you can bring as many as you want.

As a retailer, you know that plastic bags are the cheapest bags that you can give to your customers. However, you also know that they are not the most environmentally friendly option available. Many customers still like using plastic bags, and might be disappointed if you stopped using them entirely. Others, however, might be frustrated at your lack of environmental conscience. Fortunately, you can provide your customers with the plastic bags they want and still do your part to help out the environment. Here are several ways to stay green while still keeping plastic bags on hand for the customers that want them. If at all possible, purchase wholesale plastic bags that are at least partially made of recycled material. If a customer complains that you still use plastic bags, you can say that many customers still prefer them. You can then add that you only use bags that are made of at least some post-consumer content. Plastic bags with post-consumer content are not much more expensive than traditional plastic bags. You can also add a recycling station for the plastic bags at your store. Encourage your customers to bring their used plastic bags back to the store. Contact your local recycling center for information on where you can take or send these used bags. Although most local recycling centers do not accept plastic bags, they should have contact information for the nearest facility that does accept them. Finally, encourage your customers to use reusable shopping bags when they shop. Many retail stores do this by offering a small, token discount for each bag that a customer brings in to use. This discount is usually five or ten cents off the total purchase price. You could even sell reusable bags in the store next to the checkout. If you can encourage more of your customers to bring their own bags with them while shopping, you will need to purchase fewer plastic bags. This can help you save money as well. If you use these tips, you will be able to reduce your store’s environmental impact while keeping your customers and your bottom line happy.
Many eco-friendly bags are made of recycled plastic or fabric, but it could just be a bag you have used before. Bring back a paper bag from the grocery store and I bet they'll fill it up like other ecofriendly bags.
