The new channel allotment for Broadcast Television both ATSC Digital and NTSC ANALOG is VHF Low 2 thru 6 , VHF High 7 thru 13 and UHF 14 thru 51.

The point channels are like this 7.1 , 7.2 , 7.3 , 7.4 = 4 .

Now that said , 6 TV channels can be squeezed in and still have fair picture quality with ATSC, so that would be 7.1 , 7.2 , 7.3 , 7.4 , 7.5 , 7.6 , but 4 is the standard.

Now that said , more then 6 TV channels can be transmitted however the picture quality will go from bad to worse to unwatchable.

Now that said , you all so understand that there can be Virtual Channel Numbers and then the , real Channel , Channel/Frequency can be some thing else. As a example, 7.36 , the VHF 7 can really be UHF 42 and the ( .36 ) can be a number that was been selected for some reason. The most often reason is , for example a UHF Channel 36 NTSC Analog TV Station makes the choice not to buy ATSC Digital Transmitting Equipment , and so they make the choice to have their station , transmitted by an other station on a subchannel , they keep the number 36. The actual channel can be the 7.4 / 42.4 how ever the virtual channel is 7.36 .

Now i know that some of you will like to slice the pie up even smaller by talking about Mbit/s and how many Mbit/s for this and how many Mbits for that what about this and what about that , and I say if you have a need to get all the way wet , then go to the internet and jump.
