many times it will take more than 4 my suggestion would be to first place lucas oil stabilizer and the put approximately 3 1/2 quarts of the oil if not put 4 and one lucas oil stabilizer the lucas replaces one quart of oil the lucas is very effective and makes the oil alot smoother
4.2 quarts.
I change my girlfrinds oil on her 2002 4 cyl. Rav4 and it takes about 4 quarts. It might be officially stated like 3.9 or 4.1 quarts, but it won't make any difference. I run 6 quarts in my truck and it calls for 4.8. If it's american, then don't put too much oil in it. The major reason why is the bottom of the crankshaft hitting the oil in the resavoir causing it to foam and bubble, reaching the upper head, causing a huge amount of pressure.
4.5 quarts with new oil filter

2004 is 4.4 quarts but I have put 5 in to get the oil level correct on the dipstick.
