It really does depend on the organism in question, for example some species like dragonflies include metamorphosis, which completely transforms their appearance- some species include larval stages, like butterflies. Some species on average live only for a day or two, like some species of Mayfly! But all have a life and death stage, some have a 'teenage' stage, some a child/young stage and so on. It really does depend on the animal- imagine a human before it becomes an adult curling up into a ball and constructing a cocoon around its body and hangs on a leaf (or tree, mind the weight)!
Butterflies are a metormophosis animal which means they go through 2 or more stages in their lifetime. Butterflies go through 4 changes in their lives. First they are an egg, then they are a catterpillar, then they spin a cacoon, then they come out as a butterfly! Did you know... most butterflies only live for 2-3 days as an actual butterfly!?

The stages through which a plant or animal goes through in life is called the life cycle. Each plant or animal species has a different life cycle.
the stages of flowering plant's life cycle starts as a seed then the seedling, mature plant and finally death.
The life cycle of a string bean plant has four stages. These stages are, seed, germination, leaf growth, and flowering.
4 stages.
The seed germinates and the plant grows larger. Plants do not have a life cycle of several stages.
