While there are Fifty currently recognized States in the United States of America, only Fourty-eight are actually "attached to" -- a part of -- the "Mainland" of the U.S.A. The two States which are not part of the "Mainland" are Alaska, which is located in the extreme Northwest of the North American Continent (and is separated from the "mainland" by Canada), and Hawai'i, which is located in the Pacific Ocean.
The proper term for the "mainland" of the U.S.A. is the Contiguous United States.
