How many time zones are there in the continental US?

Since the state of Alaska is technically on the North American continent, the term continental US can include The Last Frontier (a nickname for the 49th state) as well as the 48 contiguous states. Including Alaska then, the continental United States encompasses five standard time zones: Alaskan Standard Time (AKST), which contains all of Alaska; Pacific Standard Time (PST), extending from the West Coast to Nevada and part of Idaho; Mountain Standard Time (MST), which stretches from Montana to New Mexico; Central Standard Time (CST), spanning from North Dakota to Texas to Alabama; and Eastern Standard Time (EST), which affects much of Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Florida as well as Ohio, West Virginia, and all the states along the Eastern seaboard.
