A female betta fish can lay up to a 400 eggs at a time - depending on the age and health of the fish- but only a few (5-30) of these are actually fertilized by the male. Once laid, the male pretty much takes over the "spawning" (care) until the baby bettas are born.

∙ 13y agoBeta fish were bread in Japan 1400 years ago for their aggression. To keep two beta fish in an aquarium you need a female and a male, which can usually be determined by fin length. An aquarium is needed that has a divided so that the two fish can see each other but not harm each other. Rearrange the aquarium at least once a week. After a period of time (depending on the individual fish) the divided can be taken out (the tank needs to be rearranged one last time) and the two fish will sometimes be able to live with each other and in expert hands even mate. The more live, or plastic plants in the tank the greater the success rate will be.
If this is to much work, then a single beta fish is all you can house in even the larger home aquariums.
