The WWI American Army was called the AEF - "American Expeditionary Force". On November 11, 1918, the day the Armistice ended the fighting, its total strength stood at 1,981,701, which included 32,385 Marines. There were 42,644 civilian employees attached to the AEF as well, mostly railroad men, lumberjacks and telephone and telegraph specialists. Combat strength on Armistice Day was 1,078,222, which total excludes all men in the Service of Supply, headquarters, schools, hospitals, liaison services and other special services. By that date the AEF had suffered over 300,000 casualties, though some of these were lightly wounded who returned to action and thus are included in the 1,078,222 combat strength.
There were another million combat troops in the pipeline from the US.
The US Army divisions of WWI were huge, over 27,000 men. This was nearly three times as large as the divisions of any other army. The US sent 43 of these massive formations to France. Twenty-three of them saw enough action to have over one thousand men killed, and several saw very extensive action.
Today Europeans, particularly the British and French, like to downplay the importance of the American contribution to the Allied victory. But, at the time, everyone agreed that the US effort was crucial and decisive.
