To become a doctor, any kind, you have to learn all fields, since Medicine is such a general, vague department. You learn all medicine for a few years, then specialize in one.
My uncle is aiming for his Doctorate and will have to go to school about 9 more years, and he is currently 26. Of course, that is only because the field he will specialize in requires him to go for that long. (He's going for Internal medicine in Newfoundland, Canada.)
