This in fact was one of Gen. Lee's objectives during the "Gettysburg Campaign". On the very day that the two Armies had their "accidental encounter" at Gettysburg, elements of Gen. Ewell's 2nd Corps(Early's Division)were at the Susquehanna River planning to cross. Harrisburg was just on the other side. Orders were received to countermarch back southward. If Harrisburg had fallen it would have given the Northern proponents of a negotiated peace much credibility and momentum.

What was the importance of the war in Savannah during the civil war?

General William T. Sherman led his lightly-armed troops on his "March to the Sea" from Atlanta to Savannah in late 1864. They generally foraged off the land as they traveled, destroying railways and disrupting Confederate enterprises. When they reached Savannah, they captured a small fort and linked up with a Union fleet, then demanded the city surrender or be destroyed. On December 20, the Confederate defenders slipped away, and Sherman occupied Savannah, completing his bold plan to further weaken the South.

How did the union wage total war on the south?

General Sherman was assigned this task by General Grant. This Total War started against mostly helpless farmers in the Shenandoah Valley. There were very few Confederate Troops there but it was a Highway for the Confederate Armies to move. In the late summer of 1864, Sherman and his Army burned about 2000 Civilian homes, 7000 livestock and killed everything in sight. This crippled the Confederates abilities to receive and produce supplies. From the Shenandoah Valley Sherman moved South destroying anything in his path all the way to Atlanta and Savannah Georgia. When his army finally turned back north, it destroyed everything again up until reached N.C. These tactics broke the hearts and minds of the Confederate Civilians and Soldiers.

What two US Civil War battles saw Confederate General Lee invade the North?

Confederate General Robert E. Lee twice performed raids into Northern territory. This was in September 17, 1862 at the Battle of Antietam. Lee hoped to recruit Marylanders into the Confederacy and also create a panic in the North that might give strength to peaced groups in the North. And, he hoped a successful raid might cause the British to intervene and hold peace talks between North and South. The raid was a failure and Lee suffered heavy losses. He did escape, however with most of his army intact. In July of 1863 he raided Pennsylvania. His hope was much the same as in 1862. This time the target was Harrisburg, the capital of Pennsylvania. Before Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia reached a panicking Harrisburg, Union General George Meade led the Army of the Potomac to a battle in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Lee lost the battle and was again to allowed to escape back to Virginia, after suffering large losses.

What led the US to defeating Lee and his army at Gettysburg and why was President Lincoln upset after the victory?

There were a number of reasons that Confederate General Lee lost at the US Battle of Gettysburg. One reason was that the North had more troops in the battle. Another important reason was that Lee had been surprised the Army of the Potomac had marched to meet him at great speed, as Lee's intention was to raid Harrisburg Pennsylvania. He never reached the city and was forced to fight the Union in a position which he had not planned for.President Lincoln was unhappy that the Union General Meade "allowed" Lee's defeated forces to escape back into Virginia.

Why did the Union army try to push past the Confederate army to Richmond Virginia?

Richmond was the Confederate capital. The Union figured that if they just pushed through Lee's forces and captured their capital, the Confederates would have to surrender. Of course, they were pushed back every time until 1865 when Grant finally reached the most ultimate goal of capturing the Confederate capital.
