There were a number of reasons that Confederate General Lee lost at the US Battle of Gettysburg. One reason was that the North had more troops in the battle. Another important reason was that Lee had been surprised the Army of the Potomac had marched to meet him at great speed, as Lee's intention was to raid Harrisburg Pennsylvania. He never reached the city and was forced to fight the Union in a position which he had not planned for.President Lincoln was unhappy that the Union General Meade "allowed" Lee's defeated forces to escape back into Virginia.
