Inflation has drastically driven up the price of goods and services since the 1920s. For example, a loaf of bread now might cost nearly 4 dollars, while in 1928 bread cost less than 10 cents per loaf.

While prices varied depending on what city you were in, typically a loaf of bread cost nine or ten cents. To give some perspective on other common items, a newspaper cost two or three cents, a gallon of gasoline was about twelve cents, and a gallon of milk was about fifty-eight cents. (These prices were obtained from 1928 newspapers in Boston and New York.)
