I feel there are two questions here:
To grow crops to feed the whole manor, tend to the livestock and sometimes the male serfs might need to got to war.
any scraps that they figured was no longer good for humans to eat it was common that animals would starve
1st Answer The Dark Ages, while still interchangeable with the Middle Ages, is historically different. The Dark Ages are typically more associated, academically speaking, to the Early Middle Ages which spans from the fall of Rome to about 1000 AD. 2nd Answer This question is subjective, so perhaps it should get a subjective answer. Both the terms Middle Ages and Dark Ages are misleading, and personally I think neither should be used. The idea of the Middle Ages came about because the people after the time wanted to compare themselves favorably with ancient Rome, and did so by denigrating the people who had gone before them. The idea of the Dark Ages is that people were ignorant. But a study of the periods that get these names tells me, and other people I know who are educated on the subject, that the Middle Ages were not inferior to the Renaissance and might have been less ignorant. Consider, witch hunts began very late in the Middle Ages and continued to become more common and more deadly through the Renaissance and Reformation. Take a look at art of the middle ages. Admittedly it is less realistic than the art of Michelangelo, but I can hardly buy the idea that it is really all inferior to the art of the Renaissance in any objective way. The Church and civil authorities did not try to regulate science in the Middle Ages, but they did in the Renaissance. We look at the Dark Ages and the Middle Ages through a lens that was strongly colored by the people of the Renaissance, and the effect of this is misunderstanding. Calling the period dark is only a part of this, but it is not helpful. +++ The Dark Ages was never a synonym for the Mediaeval period, but used to be applied to the less-well known, unstable time following the end of the Roman Empire and its relatively high standards of living; and possibly ending with the time of the Saxons.
It was important for the Medieval people of the Middle Ages to preserve food in the summer to be eaten during during the winter months. Foods which could not be preserved were only eaten when they were in season. It was not economic to keep and feed animals during the winter so animals were slaughtered in the autumn. The meat during the Middle Ages was preserved in salt. Some historians believe that pepper was also used in food preservation during the Middle Ages, however pepper was even more expensive than salt that its use for such a purpose must have been extremely limited.
Work 16 hours a day in a farm, get barely enough food to feed your 12 children and then you die of plague or wars. During the middle ages practically everyone was a slave. Maybe not whipped, but definitely not free.
they are evil faries that feed off human and donkey blood
During the Middle Ages, there were many factors contributing to an increased food supply. The development of new agricultural implements increased production. Some important examples were the horse collar, which made it possible for a horse to plow about twice as much land with about the same effort, the horse shoe, which kept horses working closer to full time, and the deep plow, which increased productivity. The introduction of the three field system of crop rotation increased the portion of agricultural land that was in production at any given time, and at the same time increased productivity of the land. The feudal system organized the serfs better than they had been organized in ancient times.New crops were introduced to Europe, mainly from the Middle East and Africa.New types of vegetables were bred. For example, Brussels sprouts are thought to have originated in the 13th century.Breeding improved livestock.Better nutrition, such as by ensuring a good supply of winter feed, made animals stronger and larger.Irrigation was improved from what it had been at the beginning of the Middle Ages. Part of this was due to the introduction of new kinds of pumps. Also, after the beginning of the Middle Ages there were a number of improvements in transportation, making it possible for farmers to move crops farther.
