According to Wikipedia, the weight of the Nagasaki bomb (also referred to as "fat man" because of it's shape) was 4,630 kilograms, which converts to 10,207 pounds, or just a little over 5 tons. The bomb was a plutonium cored implosion-type weapon with a yield roughly equivalent to 21,000 tons of T.N.T. It was detonated approximately 1,800 feet above the ground, but because of cloud cover the bombardier missed his aiming point and the bomb did less damage and killed fewer people than it was intended to because it effectively exploded in a valley, which contained some of the blast. Nevertheless, the bomb still killed about 40,000 people outright and injured approximately another 25,000. As horrible and shocking as this was, the Nagasaki bomb caused the Emperor of Japan to finally overrule his military dominated government and surrender. Had he not, according to some sources as many as a million American soldiers and 10 million Japanese might have died in an invasion of the Home Islands.
