I had a 1998 GP which is almost identical in every respect to your 2003. The front driver's side bearing went bad and the dealer charged me about $500 total for the repair.
I wanted to do it myself but the bearing is actually an entire assembly, not the inner/outer roller bearings held in with a simple snap ring like older cars. The part alone was about $200, so I figured saving my knuckles was worth it.
how do you find out if wheel bearing is bad on a 2001 grand am gt
You have to get a new hub with the bearing in it already.
I found this page with a decent step-by-step process to help guide me in replacing my LH Front Wheel Bearing Assy on my 99 GrandAM GT. It shows how to replace one on a Grand Prix, but they are extremely similar. http://www.paulstravelpictures.com/GM-Wheel-Bearing-Hub-Assembly-Replacement/index.html
Fron or rear?
You need to replace the rear wheel hub - bearing and speed sensor inclusive
this has to do with the sensor in the wheel bearing, unfortunatly the sensor and wheel bearing are one unit. first you have to find out which wheel bearing it is and then replace it, these can be expensive. I've had to replace both of mine within months of each other. take it to get a diagnostic done they can tell you which bearing it is.hope this helps
Grand Ams eat wheel bearings, if one is bad you might as well replace both of them as the other will go out in a month or so, I had a 94 and replaced 6 wheel bearings in that car in 113,000 miles.
It is most likely your front tires and then that woul mean your wheel bearing.
The 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix wheel bearing nut torque specification is 40 pounds. Do not exceed the 40 pound specification or you will risk causing the wheel seal to fail.
The front wheel bearings, of a Pontiac vibe, can be replaced by first removing the front wheel. Next, remove the axle end cap. Remove the bearing and reverse the process to install the new bearing.

Take off the steering knuckle and press out the bearing and hub.Have the new bearing pressed in with the hub and re install the knuckle.
