East Germany (the communist part) built the wall to stop people from escaping to West Germany. Many people fled through Berlin at that time. After the wall was built it became very difficult for people to visit their relatives on the other side, much more so for those living in the east. Some people did not see their family for over 40 years until the wall fell.
