Fat is bulky and lumpy so if you carry an extra five pounds of fat, you'll be lumpier than with five pounds more muscle. A five pound pile of fat will take up more space (volume) than a five pound pile of muscle; but five pounds is still five pounds. The correct way to state the muscle weighs more than fat scenario is, "Muscle is heavier by volume than fat."

A woman weighing 150 pounds with 19% fat will look much smaller (and be much healthier) than a woman at 150 pounds with 35% fat. They weigh the same, yet the composition is different. Because muscle is more dense than fat the person with less fat and more muscle will look smaller.

Muscle weighs more, but takes up less space. Therefore, it is possible that you could go on a diet and lose 10 pounds of fat but also build 10 pounds of muscle and end up weighing the same, but you would look much thinner! Don't worry about the number on the scale; worry about what you look like.

Although muscle density is about the same as fat density, muscles (use a steak for example) will sink in water while fat (example: butter) will float. This means that a 1000 cc of fat will weigh about 800 to 900 g while the same volume of muscle will weigh over 1000 g

According to science, a pound of muscle and a pound of fat weigh the same. The difference between the two is density.

A pound of marshmallows is going to take up much more space than a pound of steel.

The same is true with fat and muscle. A pound of fat is bulky, fluffy, and about the size of a small grapefruit. A pound of muscle is hard, dense, and about the size of a tangerine.

Hope this helps.

Can exercise make you gain weight?

Exercise at times can definitely make you gain weight especially if your workouts are mainly muscle building instead of cardio. Muscle weighs more than fat so sometimes gaining weigh isn't such a bad thing, especially if its muscle. In the long run gaining a few pounds of muscle is very beneficial towards you because the stronger your muscles are the faster and easier it will be to burn calories.
