The 2006 Saturn Ion sedan with the 2.2 liter, 4-cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission has 140 horsepower at 5,600 rpm. It uses regular unleaded gas and has a 13 gallon fuel tank.
Often that can be the result of a sticking injector that puts too much fuel into the engine. The fuel will eventually burn somewhere, and that may be when it comes out the exhaust.
