How much is the Vampire Diaries TV show influenced by the books as I want to watch the TV series but haven't read the books?

So far it has been EXTREMELY loosely based on the basic events like Founders Day and Halloween. The same things don't happen in the books as they do in the show so it's safe to read the books after seeing the show. The books are good as well and I am a fan of both the show and the books separate but equally. I look at them as being two different things entirely.
