The amount of money an author earns can vary widely depending on factors such as book sales, royalties, advances, and the author's publishing contract. Some authors may earn little to no money, while others may make millions.

It's usually based on how many books are sold. It depends on the author. Some work for free, some clear millions of dollars. You'll have to be more specific about what kind of author. Many people write as a hobby and treat any royalties from their books and stories as useful additional income. At the other end of the spectrum are those few authors who earn really well from their writings. For example, J K Rowling is widely thought to be the richest person in Britain. Obviously, professionally negotiated film rights are an important factor. Earning a worthwhile living (say the national average income) from writing is difficult.

The amount a newspaper publisher earns varies as much as the amount an attorney or an insurance agent earns. It is an executive level job that pays comparable to what the management of any business of similar size and scope would pay.

Newspapers in small towns with low circulation and low advertising revenues pay their publishers less than large daily newspapers in thriving markets. Earnings could vary from $30,000 per year to hundreds of thousands of dollars per year (perhaps more). Newspaper revenue would be the leading indicator followed by circulation, market size and cost of living. The publisher of The New York Times would make a lot more than the publisher of a weekly newspaper in a small town in Middle America.

It depends on if you sell the the rights to your book for a lump sum, or keep them yourself. The publishers can make up to 80% per book, but then have to pay to print/market/etc from that 80%. You may be lucky enough to get 10-15% for every book sold, but if you only sell a few you never make much. If you sell the rights for a lump sum, you may come out ahead, but the publisher loses money. Or you only get a small portion of what you could have, and the publisher's rolling in money. There is no way to know exactly how much every publisher makes.
